  20. I hate to hash out a discussion that I'm sure has gone on in this
  21. newsgroup for quite a long time, on and off, but I'd like to hear
  22. from some people with their opinions of what the top few games are
  23. for the ST.  I'm interested both in "mindless" video game-types as
  24. well as more "cerebral" strategy games.

  40. I had Analyze for a while and liked some of it but dropped it for the very
  41. same reason I dropped VIP, to slow. LDW is by far the fastest commercial
  42. spreadsheed I have seen for the ST. It loads 123 files and has a program on
  43. disk to convert its saved files to 123 format. I wouldn't call myself a
  44. power user, I don't use Macros at all, but I have used LDW on an almost daily
  45. basis for over a year, with never a problem. The only spreadsheet I like
  46. better is Excell, which I run as a Mac.

  55. Wayne, I don't know if you read this group or the 8-bit group; I'm posting to
  56. both.  I'm in Rochester, NY, same as Bob Puff and Chris Freemesser and your
  57. sister Norma!  Norma posted a message on the ACORN BBS to the effect that
  58. you're having some problems obtaining or file-transferring some software.
  59. She didn't know much about what you're trying to do, and the Powers That Be
  60. didn't seem too eager to jump to your support, but I will.  Drop me an e-mail
  61. message at this address (Chris_F_Chiesa@cup.portal.com) and tell me what
  62. you're trying to do and what problems you're having.

  64. I've done a lot of file-transfer and related manipulations; if I can't
  65. solve this at least I'll learn something new!  :-)

  75. To begin, I would like to thank all of those who replied to my original
  76. request about scoring programs for the ST.  To recap, I asked for
  77. recommendations about a good composition program that would produce good
  78. printed output, with sound output optional.
  79.  
  80. By and far, the largest number of replies I received recommended Hybrid
  81. Arts EZ-Score Plus.  The output on 24-pin printers is good, and the program
  82. has the ability to play back through the sound chip or MIDI.  Since this
  83. program can be had for around $100 US, it is probably the one I'm going to
  84. get.
  85.  
  86. Another recommendation was the ScoreST Music DTP program in the Jan. 1990
  87. issue of Start.  Since I receive Start, I tried it out.  It seems to be quite
  88. useful, though it has no playback capability.  However, I have not been able
  89. to get really good printouts from this program, though I'm still working on
  90. modifying the printer driver.  This program is definately the cheapest, though.
  91.  
  92. The other recommendation made was from Take Control in England, and the name of
  93. the program is Music DTP.  It was highly recommended, but seems a bit pricey
  94. for me.

  180. Don't panic. You don't lose a thing.

  182. A compilation copyright covers only the compilation. It does not remove a
  183. public-domain work from the public domain, nor does it infringe on your
  184. rights as author of a message (whatever that means -- since you're making
  185. public utterances, your rights to control their redistribution are pretty
  186. shaky).

  188. An analogy may be helpful.

  190. Let's imagine that you and I are both professors at Harvard University. We
  191. get in a loud argument on the steps of the library about the invasion of
  192. Panama.
  193.  
  194. We are so brilliant in our debating that we attract the attention of a
  195. wandering reporter for the New York Times, who takes extensive notes.
  196.  
  197. Later we renew our debate in a Usenet conference. One of the Times'
  198. several computer-literate reporters sees the exchange.

  200. Eventually both our spoken and our written words are quoted at length in a
  201. Times story. The Times is protected by copyright and by an army of highly
  202. paid lawyers.

  204. There is nothing we can do to prevent the profit-making Times from quoting
  205. us. There is nothing we can do to prevent the Times from claiming a
  206. copyright on the reporter's story. There is nothing we can do to prevent
  207. the Times from selling that story to the client newspapers of the New York
  208. Times News Service, thereby indirectly making even more profit on our
  209. brilliant debate.

  212. from reusing our brilliant words (perhaps we write books about our

  218. Times article and reprints it verbatim without permission, since it owns

  236. Here's an interesting sidenote:

  238. I was on GEnie last night, attending the Atari ST RT discussions.
  239. (Every Wednesday night at 10:00 pm EST). I brought up the
  240. USEnet->GEnie transfer topic. Most people didn't know it
  241. existed, and those that did were *glad* that it stopped.
  242. It seems that the USEnet messages were saturating the Atari ST
  243. section. (Too much info, too fast.) People found they
  244. couldn't keep up, even for the few days (hours?) it was operating.
  245.  
  246. This makes sense. When I was administering a UUCP site a year
  247. ago, we'd get about 5 MBytes/week of USEnet articles. comp.sys.atari.st
  248. is one of the more voluminous sections...I wonder if GEnie took
  249. that into account. :) Probably started filling up their disk space.
